A Guide To
Transition To
A Freelancer

Plan your exit strategically

Avoid burning bridges - Give proper notice and leave on good terms. You might get referrals from your old salon.
Review your contract - Check for non complete clauses or client restrictions.
Save money - Have at least 2-3 months of expenses saved to cover the transition.

Set up the business properly

Register your business - Choose a name, register with HMRC, or your local tax authority.
Get insured - Public liability, treatment risk and equipment insurance are essential.

Booking & invoicing - Use reliable systems to keep your admin in check.

Define your services & prices

Be clear & consistent - create a price list that reflects your time, skill, travel & products
Don't undercharge - Factor in costs you used to take for granted in a salon (e.g shampoo, electricity, rent.)

Offer packages or loyalty discounts- this encourages repeat business.

Market yourself

Create a professional Instagram & Facebook - Showcase your work with before & after photos, videos, client testimonials.
Build a website - A website or booking platform with a profile.
Encourage referrals - Offer a small discount to clients who refer a friend.

Sort your kit & workspace

Mobile setup - Invest in quality portable tools.
Salon from home - Make sure your space is clean, well-lit and professional.
Kit - Use & recommend your favourite products. Retail can become extra income.

Organise your schedule

Be flexible but firm - Create working hours and stick to them. Avoid burnout
Automate reminders - Appointment confirmations & reminders help avoid no shows.

Keep track of finances

Log income and expenses from day one
Save for tax - Put aside 20-30% of earnings for tax and national insurance.
Consider a book keeper or accountant once you grow.

Build Client Relationships

Be personal & professional - Clients will return not just for your skills, but for how you make them feel.
Follow up -  A thank you message or reminder to rebook goes a long way.
Ask for reviews - Google, Facebook or on booking platforms.
