Hair Strobing for Fall - Featuring Matrix

Hair Strobing for Fall - Featuring Matrix
As Creative Colour Expert, Sharon Peake (@ethoshairdressing), sums up perfectly,
“Hair strobing is the newest highlighting technique in hair colour, designed to enhance your client’s favourite features.”

Admittedly, the concept has been around for a while now - a combination of the ever-strong balayage technique and make-up contouring trend. We had just about got the hang of using shadow and highlighter to enhance or down-play features on our face - then we realised we could apply this to our hair and hair colour.

Now that the the mornings and evenings are getting cooler and the sun is going down just that little bit earlier - autumn is finally here. And the change in season brings with it clients looking to change up their hair colour. Possibly going for something warmer in-keeping with an autumnal palette or perhaps brighter to offset the cold weather blues. Either way, now is the perfect time to introduce them to Hair Strobing.

Everyone starts to feel a little bit low this time of year and strobing brings a fresh colour experience. Not only can you create distraction from flaws but it can highlight what your client loves about their face and neck - lifting their mood and giving them that added confidence. It's also completely bespoke so they will feel unique and special as they stand out from the crowd.

Take note of anyone that comes into your salon wearing highlighter on their cheeks, nose and cupids bow - these are the clients that understand the benefits of strobing. It's now more common to see both hair and skin strobing together in the fashion world than one without the other.

Matrix has been a pioneer and champion of the strobing technique since the beginning. Not only is it perfect for your clients experiencing the end of summer blues but your salon can benefit too:

  • The personalised approach will ensure you come across as a professional, lavish and knowledgeable as a salon and stylist. This kind of reputation is quick to travel by word of mouth as friends and relatives want the same experience.
  • Though you're essentially offering more services, overall it will take less time to complete as you can paint on the highlights while your tint is processing.
  • It could help convert any of those clients that are undecided on colour to go for it! Just as we contour our face to appear naturally enhanced and make-up free, strobing doesn't necessarily have to be a huge change. Just a touch of added light or shade in specific placement.
  • In the same way, you will show off your haircuts even further and make them appear more stunning and suited to your clients. For example, apply colour to the ends of a fringe to brighten up the eyes and accentuate the shape of the cut.

Examples of Strobing Techniques

Matrix previously showed us their Rock 'N' Strobe looks which were bold and made a true statement announcing the arrival of hair strobing but in their recent magazine issue, they have also developed new, softer Candy Strobe looks which are influenced by pastel colours.

Ask your Matrix rep for more information on the looks below and how to recreate them for yourself..

The Full Strobe: Lighting up the whole face

Perfect for Autumn when skin can start to lose it's glow. Use a brighter colour in the front sections of the hair closest to the face. The highlighting colours and tones you have to choose from are infinite. Go warm with honeys and caramels or more ashy such as in this example. You will create a masterpiece every time.

The Profile Strobe: the illusion of length

Perfect for short hair. Adding a lighter shade to the tips of hair draws the eye upwards creating a strong profile.

The Eye Strobe: bringing out the eyes

Add highlights around the eye area in the fringe to force people to really see those eyes. Using a colour that compliments will take this effect even further.
